A well-loved public park in the country’s Summer Capital has entered a new chapter after a P20-million rehabilitation funded by Melco Resorts (Philippines) Foundation Corporation (MRP Foundation), the corporate social responsibility arm of City of Dreams Manila.
The upgraded Sunshine Park was formally turned over in late May during an inauguration led by Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong and MRP Foundation Vice President Armin Antonio B. Raquel Santos, together with city officials and project partners. Students from the University of the Cordilleras performed during the ceremony, highlighting the park’s longstanding ties to Baguio’s academic and creative communities.
A familiar landmark, thoughtfully renewed
Located beside the University of the Philippines Baguio campus and near the University of the Cordilleras, Sunshine Park has long served as a shared space for students, workers, residents, artists, and visitors.
The rehabilitation preserved key features of the original park, including its stage, ramp, and drop-off area, while introducing wider pathways, landscaped open spaces, picnic tables, outdoor calisthenics equipment, and other amenities. The park also features Language of Photography, a public art installation by Baguio artist Clinton Aniversario.
The project broke ground in March 2025 and was implemented by the Baguio City Government using funds donated by MRP Foundation.

“Through this rehabilitation, we hope to contribute to the continued evolution of a landmark that remains integral to the country’s Summer Capital. More than a public space, Sunshine Park fosters connection, well-being, and shared experiences while strengthening the sense of place and community that has long defined Baguio.”
Designed with the community in mind
The rehabilitation was carried out under the Baguio City Government’s Adopt-a-Park Program. According to Mayor Magalong, the redevelopment was shaped by years of observing how people use the park, along with consultations involving residents, schools, artists, and community organizations. The improvements also complement the city’s broader sustainability efforts, including the planned rehabilitation of the nearby Tree Park.
Baguio City Environment and Parks Management Office head Atty. Rhenan Diwas said the project evolved through months of consultation and planning, guided by the concept of “education beyond walls” to ensure the park continues to support learning, cultural activities, and creative expression.
Extending support beyond public spaces
The Sunshine Park project is part of MRP Foundation’s wider initiatives in environmental stewardship, education, culture, and health, aligned with PAGCOR’s efforts to create meaningful social impact in partnership with local governments and institutions.
Earlier this year, the foundation funded the P50-million redevelopment of People’s Park in Caloocan City and donated P9.9 million worth of security equipment and vehicles to the Philippine National Police National Capital Region Police Office to support public safety and emergency response.
